Arcata Fatal Bicycle Accident
I’m Ed Smith, an Arcata car accident lawyer. On Sunday, August 13, 2017, a bicyclist tragically lost their life after crashing off of the shoulder of a road in Arcata.
Accident Info
California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported to the public that a collision happened in the afternoon sometime shortly after 1:30 p.m. Reports indicate that a cyclist, who CHP noted was male, had been traveling on Elizabeth Drive near the intersection at West End Road.
CHP indicated that as the man was biking he somehow lost control of his bicycle and went off of the roadway before crashing and receiving major traumatic injuries.
Response and Fatality
As soon as CHP was alerted to the fact that a cyclist had been injured, they dispatched emergency responders to the site of the accident. Medical officials reported that, after finding the injured man, they immediately had him taken to the nearby Mad River Medical Center for emergency treatment. However, the victim’s injuries proved to be too great and he was declared deceased at the hospital shortly after he arrived.
The identity of the man, as well as the specific injuries that he sustained, have not yet been reported by authorities.

Investigation
CHP is currently investigating what may have caused this accident. Officers have stated they do not think that the cyclist was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that the man had been wearing a safety helmet at the time of the accident.
Possible factors in this collision include a medical emergency on the part of the cyclist, faulty bicycle parts, damaged or otherwise unsafe roadways, and perhaps the negligent actions of a driver that the cyclist was attempting to avoid.

Arcata has seen its fair share of accidents in recent weeks. These accidents include a July 23, 2017, accident in which a motorcycle struck an SUV head-on, leading to the death of an Arcata resident. The accident left the motorcyclist with fatal injuries.
Another recent Arcata accident occurred on June 24, 2017, when a collision in Arcata on Highway 101 at the exit for South G Street led to the death of a local man. The collision happened after a driver failed to properly maneuver through the exit ramp and collided head-on with a nearby tree.
