Officials reported that a 22-year-old man from Antioch was killed in a recent motor vehicle crash on the Bay Bridge. The incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, June 19, 2022, at approximately 3:00 a.m. on westbound I-80 on the Bay Bridge near Treasure Island.

A preliminary report by the California Highway Patrol revealed that a 2007 Infiniti M45 reportedly slowed down from possible mechanical issues. CHP traffic officers indicated that a 2014 Nissan Frontier allegedly rear-ended the Infiniti.

The Nissan driver was hospitalized for injuries described as minor. The Infiniti driver, a 22-year-old woman from San Francisco, was also treated at the hospital for unspecified injuries. The front-seat passenger and one of the two passengers in the rear seat of the Infiniti both sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Sadly, the other rear seat passenger succumbed to their injuries.

Officials issued a closure of all lanes on the Bay Bridge for a couple hours to clear the scene. Additional information on the fatal car accident on westbound I-80 near Treasure Island has not yet been released due to an ongoing investigation into the incident.

What is Involved in a Wrongful Death Claim?

When a loved one has lost their life in a recent motor vehicle collision, it may leave survivors overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. If the incident was the result of someone else’s negligence, chances are that the loss of life could have been prevented. This knowledge may compound the grieving process with frustration and anger for the family of the decedent. Fortunately, they may seek justice and financial recovery in a wrongful death claim filed against the at-fault party and their insurer.

Proving economic and non-economic damages that surviving family members have suffered because of a loved one’s passing is also an essential part of a wrongful death claim. These may include loss of future financial support and benefits, mental anguish, funeral service costs, medical bills, and more. Establishing the value of these losses often requires working with expert witnesses such as an economist. Fortunately, an accident attorney will have the resources to make that possible. Given that difficult defense counsel and insurance companies are often involved in the recovery process, working with an experienced lawyer can work to a family’s benefit.

Following the loss of a loved one in an accident, surviving family members should discuss their potential case with an experienced Antioch wrongful death lawyer immediately if they wish to seek justice and compensation. Partly, this is due to the strict filing criteria and deadlines that apply to such cases. What this means is that survivors have a limited amount of time to take legal action, or they may lose the opportunity of doing so from the failure to meet the two-year statute of limitations.
