Annual Chico Bicycle Tour Fundraiser

On Sunday, March 1, 2020, local cyclist group Chico Velo hosted their annual bicycle tour to help raise funds for increasing safety for area bikers. The yearly event is named the “Tour de Ed” in honor of Ed McLaughlin, a local man who worked hard to see Chico improve amenities for cyclists after he was seriously injured in an accident.

The Event

Chico Velo began hosting the Tour De Ed in 2008 as a way to raise money for cyclists who had suffered accident trauma. Now that the tour is in its 13th year, its organizers are still focused on helping cyclists in the Chico community. Funds raised during the tour will go toward giving safe cycling lessons to elders and students. Chico Velo Executive Director John Pearson noted that, in addition to increasing safety, the club aims to get “kids and people on bikes.”

The ride began in the parking lot of the Chico Municipal center and continued on with a volunteer police escort through downtown and to city limits. After reaching city limits, cyclists continued toward Durham Elementary School, where they were able to enjoy lunch before turning around and heading back to Chico using the midway bike path.

The Next Bicycle Tour

Chico Velo hosts various rides throughout the year. The next ride will be taking place on Sunday, April 26, 2020, and will feature routes that range from 12 to 125 miles. As a bonus, Chico Velo expects local wildflowers to be out in force, so cyclists can look forward to a colorful time! To get more information about Chico Velo, you can visit their website.

Cyclist Injuries

Unlike vehicle drivers and passengers, cyclists don’t have steel walls, airbags, or seatbelts to protect them. Furthermore, cyclists are almost always knocked off their bicycles in the event of an accident and have very little ability to brace themselves for the fall. Together, these circumstances mean that cyclists are likely to suffer major injuries if they are involved in a crash.

Common serious cyclist injuries include:

All of these injuries can range in severity, and many can easily cause chronic health issues. After suffering a serious injury, cyclists can be left with limited mobility or chronic pain. If the injury affects the brain, the cyclist may have temporary or even permanent issues with cognition or other mental faculties.

Claiming Compensation

Recovering from a serious injury can be very expensive. Crash survivors often need to undergo one or more medical procedures and also may need to pay for ambulance rides, medications, hospital stays, and more. On top of this, many crash survivors are left unable to work for a period of time, causing a loss of income.

To make sure that you receive the compensation you need to cover these expenses, it’s important to work with a trusted attorney and file a personal injury claim. By doing so, many crash survivors are able to hold at-fault parties such as reckless drivers financially responsible for their damages.
