Profile on American Canyon

Incorporated in the year 1992, the City of American Canyon is situated just around 35 miles outside of San Francisco in the southernmost region of the County of Napa. This city was developed in the years after World War II with the establishment of the McKnight Acres section of the city in 1940 and the addition of the Rancho Del Mar area in the 1950s.

City Government

American Canyon functions as a City Manager/Council government and is classified as a general law city. The city’s elected leadership includes a mayor as well as four city council members. A Vice Mayor is appointed by members of the council as is a City Manager. The City Manager serves as the city’s top official. American Canyon employs a staff of about 80 full-time workers and 60 seasonal or else part-time staff. The 2016-2017 budget for the city is approximately 41 million dollars.

American Canyon’s municipal departments include Finance, Administration, Police (which are provided to the city by way of a contract with the Napa County Sheriff’s Department), Public Works, and Parks & Recreation. American Canyon is protected from fires by the American Canyon Fire Protection District, which is a subsidiary department under the City Council and is overseen by a Fire Chief that the City Council appoints.

Population

American Canyon’s population was 20,374 as of January 1, 2016. The population is estimated by city officials to reach 23,700 within the next fifteen years. Growth in residential areas has necessitated the building of a secondary school. The American Canyon High School, home to the American Canyon Wolves, opened to students in August 2010. The school features extensive athletics facilities as well as a theater for the performing arts that is capable of seating an audience of 400. Because of an agreement with the school district of Napa Valley, the community of American Canyon can schedule events at the center of 180 days per year.
