One Hurt in Alleged Napa DUI

One person was hospitalized after suffering injuries in an alleged Napa DUI accident on Saturday, February 15, 2020. According to the Napa Police Department (NPD), the crash happened within the city near the downtown area and involved two vehicles. One of the involved drivers has reportedly been placed under arrest on a felony charge of causing injury while driving under the influence.

Crash Details

NPD Seargent Mike Walund stated that the crash happened just before 7:00 p.m. in the Oxbow District. Police reportedly received a phone call about a reckless driver several minutes before the accident happened. The motorist reportedly drove through the intersection of Soscol and Lincoln avenues before crossing through a median and entering oncoming traffic. As the vehicle entered oncoming lanes, it crashed head-on into a second car.

Response

NPD sent out emergency staff to the site right away. When responders reached the crash scene, they found that the driver of the second vehicle had suffered significant injuries. The driver was placed on a ground ambulance and driven to a nearby hospital for care. Medical officials indicated that the injuries were not life-threatening.

The other driver, identified as a 46-year-old woman, was placed under arrest at the collision scene and has since been booked into the Napa County Jail. Reports did not state whether or not she suffered any injuries during the incident.

DUI in Napa

According to UC Berkeley statistics, there were 3,036 injury-related car crashes in the city of Napa between 2008 and 2019. Out of these collisions, 409 involved alcohol, and 291 had DUI listed as the primary causal factor. While this means that less than ten percent of crashes in Napa involved an intoxicated driver, local DUI collisions tended to have much more serious consequences.

The data shows that Napa traumatic auto accidents had a fatality rate of around .66 percent and a severe injury rate of 5.5 percent. In comparison, collisions that involved alcohol were fatal nearly 2 percent of the time and had a severe injury rate of 15.89 percent. This shows that Napa DUI crashes were around three times as likely to involve a serious injury and over twice as likely to cause fatal trauma.
