Accidents September 3

PATTERSON, CA — On the night of September 2, 2025, at approximately 11:10 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a distress call about a stranded motorist trying to signal for help along northbound Interstate 5, just south of Sperry Avenue.

Upon arriving, CHP officers discovered an unoccupied Hyundai sedan parked on the right shoulder. A search of the nearby area led to the heartbreaking discovery of an elderly man, lying in the center median, suffering from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. Despite emergency efforts, the 84-year-old man, a resident of Lamont, California, tragically passed away at the scene.

Initial findings suggest that the man had exited his vehicle in an attempt to get the attention of passing drivers. At some point, he entered the traffic lanes and was struck by an unidentified vehicle, the driver of which did not remain at the scene.

CHP investigators are treating this case as a potential hit-and-run and are working diligently to uncover more details. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.

If you have any information, please reach out to Officer Aaron Norseen at the Modesto CHP Office by calling (209) 545-7440. Your assistance could be vital in bringing clarity and compassion to a deeply tragic situation.
