Accidents November 13

CERES, CA – Authorities shared Wednesday that a Ceres police sergeant is recovering from minor injuries sustained when a suspected impaired driver struck his patrol car earlier this week.

The crash took place Monday night on Herndon Road, where officers had been responding to a separate call for service. The sergeant was stopped in a northbound turn lane when another vehicle approached and entered the same lane. Even though the sergeant activated his emergency lights to alert the driver, the oncoming car smashed head-on into the patrol vehicle.

Police said the driver reportedly showed clear signs of intoxication. Officers said she failed field sobriety tests, and that her blood alcohol content was found to be nearly three times the legal limit.
Investigators also discovered that she was currently on probation for a prior DUI offense. She was taken into custody and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on felony DUI charges.

She was not hurt in the crash. The police sergeant sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene.

Ceres Police expressed relief that the incident did not result in more serious harm, while reminding the community of the very real dangers of impaired driving. They also noted that another, unrelated collision involving a suspected drunk driver and a patrol vehicle occurred just five days earlier.

CERES, CA – Three people were seriously injured Wednesday evening in a head-on collision at Eastgate Boulevard and Hatch Road during the busy evening commute, according to the Ceres Police Department.

Around 5:20 p.m., a 19-year-old Modesto man driving a Honda Civic westbound on Hatch Road reportedly crossed the center line, striking an eastbound Kia Soul driven by a 71-year-old man with his 69-year-old wife as a passenger.

The impact left all three individuals with serious injuries. Modesto firefighters extricated the young driver, who was pinned inside his vehicle, before all three victims were transported to local hospitals for emergency treatment.

Investigators said none of those involved remembered the moment of impact, noting that memory loss can occur after traumatic events. Police cleared the scene by about 6:20 p.m.

Ceres Police thanked first responders for their quick actions and extended their thoughts to the victims and families affected by the crash.
