MODESTO, CA — A devastating crash near the Modesto airport early Wednesday morning claimed the life of a woman and left two others with serious injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred around 5:45 a.m. on Mitchell Road, just south of Tenaya Drive.

Authorities report that a 53-year-old Modesto woman was driving a Ford SUV northbound on Mitchell Road and approaching a curve when, for reasons still under investigation, her vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2007 Cadillac SUV.

Tragically, the woman behind the wheel of the Ford SUV died at the scene. Two passengers in her vehicle — a 34-year-old woman from Hughson and a 67-year-old man from Waterford — were transported to a nearby hospital with major injuries.

The driver of the Cadillac, a 64-year-old Modesto man, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

At this time, it is unknown whether impairment was a factor in the crash.

The roadway remained closed for several hours while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators began their work.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragic incident.
