HILMAR, CA – Two men were arrested following a devastating head-on crash in Merced County Wednesday morning, June 8, that left two people hospitalized.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers responded just before 2 a.m. to a collision on Route 165, just north of Williams Avenue.
When emergency crews arrived, they found a 9-year-old boy unresponsive and immediately began performing CPR in an effort to save his life.
Investigators said Jose Ramirez, 31, was driving a 2002 Honda Civic southbound on Route 165 at an unknown speed when he veered into the northbound lane.
Concurrently, a 66-year-old woman was traveling north in a 2025 Chrysler SUV when the two vehicles collided head-on.
The woman suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.
CHP said the 9-year-old boy was riding in the Honda Civic alongside his father, Oscar Lopez Campos, 30, who was seated in the front passenger seat.
After receiving CPR at the scene, the child regained consciousness and was airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for further medical care.
Campos sustained minor injuries in the collision.
During the investigation, officers determined that both Campos and Ramirez had consumed alcohol before the crash.
