ATWATER, CA — A serious crash involving a wrong-way driver resulted in several people being hurt, including three children, and required multiple victims to be taken to nearby hospitals for care. Authorities shared that both drivers involved are believed to have been under the influence at the time of the collision.
According to the California Highway Patrol Merced Area office, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, at approximately 12:48 a.m., when the Merced Communication Center received reports of a head-on crash along southbound State Route 99, just north of Atwater Boulevard.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a two-vehicle collision with significant injuries. First responders quickly provided medical attention at the scene before transporting those injured to nearby medical centers for further treatment. The injuries were described as ranging from moderate to severe.
Early findings indicate that Diane Rivas, 35, of Antioch, was driving a 2019 Honda Civic in the wrong direction—northbound in the southbound lanes—at around 40 mph. Humberto Orozco Cervantes, 33, of Merced, was traveling southbound in a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox at approximately 65 to 70 mph. The two vehicles collided head-on in the left lane of southbound State Route 99.
Three children were taken to a medical facility in Madera for treatment of moderate to serious injuries. Two adult women were also transported to separate hospitals, both suffering major injuries.
Officials later determined that both drivers were under the influence of alcohol. They were taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence as the investigation continues.
