MERCED, CA — Authorities are asking for the community’s help in identifying a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a young person seriously injured on April 3, 2026, according to a post from the California Highway Patrol’s Merced Area office.

The collision happened on Wardrobe Ave. around 8:03 p.m., just west of Thornton Road, outside the Merced city limits. When emergency crews arrived, they found a juvenile male suffering from major injuries after being struck by a vehicle while riding a minibike.

Investigators shared that the juvenile had been trying to ride across Wardrobe Avenue at night on a minibike that was without a functioning headlight. Simultaneously, a dark-colored Toyota bZ4X—believed to be a 2023 or newer model—was traveling west. For reasons that are still being examined, the driver did not see the rider and struck the minibike, causing the juvenile to be thrown onto the roadway.

The driver did not stop and left the scene. Authorities believe the vehicle may have damage to its left front side as a result of the crash.

The injured juvenile, who is from Merced, sustained serious injuries. Officials have not released the individual’s name.

The CHP Merced Area is encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle or driver to come forward. Investigating Officer Lou Saeteurn can be reached at (209) 356-6600.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials emphasize that even small details from witnesses or nearby surveillance footage could play an important role in identifying the driver and bringing clarity to what happened.
