Accident Fatally Injures Gustine Man

Accident Fatally Injures Gustine Man — A head-on collision in Merced County claimed the life of a Gustine man on September 7, 2018. The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 in the morning along Highway 33 near Gun Club Road just south of Gustine. A driver of a 2013 Ford pickup truck was traveling southbound along the highway when a northbound 2005 Toyota Tacoma entered the southbound lane to overtake a 2009 Volvo big rig. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Ford driver veered to the left to avoid a collision with the oncoming Toyota but, unfortunately, collided head-on with the tractor-trailer. The impact of the crash caused the Ford driver to be ejected out of the vehicle while the big rig continued off the roadway and came to a rest on its side after shearing off a power pole in the area. Sadly, the Ford driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The victim has been identified by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office as 34-year-old John Moitozo of Gustine.

My sincere thoughts and condolences are with those mourning the loss of their loved one during this difficult time.

Head-On Collisions

An accident where the front ends of two vehicles strike each other is known as a head-on collision. These types of crashes are considered the most dangerous since the impact doubles in severity due to the opposing speeds of both vehicles. Serious injuries resulting from these types of accidents may include bone fractures, head injuries, spinal cord damage, dashboard knee, and more. When the airbags deploy in these accidents, additional trauma to the ears, eyes, and face may also occur. While reports state that head-on collisions account for only two percent of all car accidents, these crashes are responsible for nearly 10 percent of all traffic collision fatalities in the country each year.

Wrongful Death

When a driver commits a traffic violation, that motorist can endanger the lives of others on the roadway. Those who disregard traffic laws are considered negligent when an accident occurs. If the accident results in the loss of life, a wrongful death claim may be filed by surviving family members. In these types of cases, family members of the decedent may be able to recover compensation for their losses.
