Eight-Vehicle Crash Involving Overturned Big Rig Shuts Down Lanes of I-5 in Stockton

STOCKTON, CA — Thursday evening, September 17, an overturned big rig shuts down lanes of I-5 in Stockton, triggering a crash that ultimately involved 8 vehicles. The major accident closed down multiple northbound lanes on Interstate-5 near March Lane in Stockton, according to a report from the Stockton CHP.

Officials said they began receiving multiple calls about the collision around 5:20 p.m. When CHP officers arrived, they found the big rig, which was transporting watermelons, overturned across lanes 3, 4, and 5. Five other vehicles suffered serious damage in the collision.

The commercial truck driver, who was reported being alert at the scene, was transported to San Joaquin General Hospital with only minor injuries.

Two other people involved in the crash were also driven to the hospital, one with severe injuries. At least two others experienced minor injuries. All were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

I-5 remained heavily affected, and the collision created significant traffic problems for motorists traveling through Stockton.

According to CHP, lanes 2 through 5 remained closed for multiple hours while crews worked to clean up the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
