Two Injured in Rollover Crash on I-5 Near O’Brien Exit in Redding Area

Two men were injured in rollover crash on I-5 near O’Brien exit in Redding after a white SUV traveled off southbound Interstate 5 and rolled into a ditch near exit in the Redding area on Wednesday evening, September 9, 2026.

The single-vehicle collision was reported shortly after 7:10 p.m. Initial reports indicated that the SUV left the roadway and entered a ditch along I-5.

White SUV Rolls Off Interstate 5

According to initial traffic reports, the white SUV traveled off the roadway north of the O’Brien exit and came to rest in a ditch.

The vehicle was initially reported on its side but was later described as upright. Debris from the collision was also reported in the roadway.

Emergency personnel arriving at the scene found occupants outside the vehicle. Initial incident command information indicated that two people were injured, with one reportedly suffering minor injuries and another suffering moderate injuries.

Two Men Transported to Hospital

One patient, described as a man approximately 35 years old, suffered significant injuries to his head during the rollover. Emergency personnel reported that he was alert following the collision and had apparently been restrained.

The SUV reportedly sustained extensive damage during the crash.

A second patient, identified in emergency traffic as a 44-year-old man who had been riding as a passenger, was also transported from the scene. He reportedly complained of neck and back pain as well as abdominal pain and tenderness.

The passenger was able to walk at the scene and reportedly remembered the collision.

Both men were transported to Mercy Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Emergency Crews Respond to I-5 Rollover

Firefighters, medical personnel, and law enforcement responded to the collision. A second medical unit was requested to assist with transporting the injured occupants.

A towing company was also called to recover the SUV from the ditch.

Initial reports indicated that the vehicle had rolled and sustained significant damage. The exact number of times the SUV may have rolled was not immediately available.

Cause of I-5 Rollover Crash Under Investigation

The circumstances that caused the SUV to leave Interstate 5 remain unclear.

Emergency radio traffic included an estimated speed of approximately 70 mph, but authorities had not determined whether speed contributed to the collision.

Investigators may consider roadway conditions, vehicle condition, driver actions, speed, and other available evidence when determining what caused the SUV to leave the freeway.

Rollover Accident Safety

Rollover crashes can cause serious injuries because occupants may experience multiple impacts as a vehicle overturns. Wearing a properly fitted seat belt can help reduce the risk of being thrown around inside or ejected from a vehicle during a rollover.

Drivers traveling at freeway speeds should also maintain a safe speed for roadway and weather conditions, avoid distractions, and make gradual steering corrections if a vehicle begins drifting from its lane.
