Big Rig Spills Diesel on Highway 50 in Sacramento

A big rig spills diesel on Highway 50 in Sacramento after the semi-truck overturned on westbound Highway 50, prompting an extensive hazardous-materials response, and causing significant traffic delays on September 16, 2026.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. near the 10th Street off-ramp.

Big Rig Overturns Near 10th Street Off-Ramp

According to fire officials, the semi-truck overturned while traveling on Highway 50 near the 10th Street exit.

The tanker was reportedly carrying approximately 1,500 gallons of fuel when it overturned. Officials estimated that nearly 100 gallons of red diesel spilled from the truck.

Approximately 100 gallons traveled down the off-ramp, with an estimated 50 gallons reaching street level.

Diesel Enters Sacramento Storm-Drain System

Emergency crews worked to contain the spill, but some of the diesel reportedly entered the city’s storm-drain system. The Sacramento Fire Department notified the City of Sacramento, and crews began filtering and removing the fuel from the drainage system.

Due to the risk of ignition, firefighters positioned fire-suppression equipment and water supplies nearby as a precaution.

Highway 50 Lanes Closed During Cleanup

The cleanup operation continued for several hours and caused traffic delays along westbound Highway 50.

Truck Driver Hospitalized After Rollover

The truck driver was transported to a hospital following the crash and was reported to be in stable condition.

The owner of Sanghera Tank Lines, the company associated with the truck, said the driver had worked for the company for several years and suffered what were believed to be minor injuries.

No other vehicles were reported to have been involved in the rollover.

Cause of Highway 50 Big Rig Crash Under Investigation

The circumstances that caused the tanker truck to overturn were not immediately known.

The trucking company indicated that additional information about the collision may become available after the driver is evaluated and able to provide an account of what occurred.

Authorities may examine the truck’s mechanical condition, roadway evidence, vehicle data, speed, cargo, and other available information as part of the investigation.

Hazards of Tanker Truck Rollovers

Crashes involving tanker trucks can create dangers beyond the initial collision. When fuel or other hazardous materials spill onto a roadway, emergency crews may need to close lanes and surrounding areas to reduce the risk of fire and prevent contaminants from entering nearby drainage systems or waterways.

Motorists approaching a truck crash involving a fuel spill should follow emergency personnel’s directions, avoid driving through spilled material, and allow additional distance from the collision scene.
