Several Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 80 Near Blue Canyon

Several people were injured in a major multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Blue Canyon in Placer County on Monday, July 20, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Multi-Vehicle Crash Involves Big Rigs

The crash occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. near the Drum Forebay Road off-ramp and involved at least two big rigs and four to five additional vehicles in the westbound lanes.

According to CHP, one of the big rigs left the roadway and traveled down an embankment during the collision.

Diesel Spill Complicates Response

The crash also resulted in a significant diesel fuel spill, prompting an extensive emergency response as crews worked to contain the spill, assist those involved, and clear the roadway.

Authorities confirmed that several people were injured, although the extent of their injuries has not been released.

Investigation Ongoing

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the collision. Additional details regarding the events leading up to the crash and the identities of those involved have not yet been made public.

Extra Caution Around Commercial Trucks

Collisions involving large commercial vehicles can have devastating consequences because of their size and weight. Drivers can improve roadway safety by maintaining safe following distances, avoiding lingering in a truck’s blind spots, signaling lane changes early, and allowing trucks additional space to brake and maneuver, especially on mountain highways.
