Stay Safe: Don’t Drive Impaired

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a direct route to a catastrophic accident. Substances compromise your reflexes, judgment, and physical control behind the wheel. Protecting yourself and others starts with a personal pledge: never drive impaired, and always plan your safe ride home ahead of time.

How Impairment Disables Your Driving Skills

When you consume alcohol or drugs, your central nervous system slows down, stripping away the exact skills required to navigate a vehicle safely:

  • Delayed Reaction Time: What would normally be an instant brake reflex becomes a sluggish delay. At highway speeds, even a half-second delay can mean the difference between a near-miss and a fatal rear-end collision.
  • Compromised Judgment: Impairment skews your perception of speed, distance, and risk. Drivers under the influence often overestimate their abilities and fail to recognize immediate hazards.
  • Declining Coordination: Fine motor skills—like steering smoothly, tracking lanes, and managing the pedals—deteriorate rapidly, leading to drifting, swerving, and loss of vehicle control.
