MODESTO, CA – Tragically, a second person has died following a three-vehicle crash on Saturday night, June 27, on Ladd Road north of Modesto. Investigators believe the crash was caused by a Porsche driver who was traveling at a high rate of speed and may have been under the influence of alcohol.
A 38-year-old Manteca man died Sunday at UC Davis Medical Center after being critically injured in the collision, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. CHP confirmed Tuesday that he died the day after the crash.
This is the second death associated with the crash. The 57-year-old driver of the Porsche, from Modesto, was determined to be deceased at the scene.
According to the CHP, at approximately 9:35 p.m., a green current-model Porsche coupe was speeding westbound on Ladd Road when it struck the rear of a black 2016 Ram pickup. The impact caused the pickup to leave the north side of the roadway, where it overturned. The Porsche then crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a white 2023 Mercedes SUV before it ignited into flames. When emergency crews arrived, the Porsche was on fire and blocking the roadway.
The Porsche driver died at the scene.
The Manteca man, who was a passenger in the Porsche, suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where he died the following day. Both people in the Porsche were reportedly wearing seat belts.
The Ram driver, a 27-year-old Manteca man, suffered minor injuries. The five passengers in the vehicle—a 42-year-old female, a 26-year-old female, a 14-year-old female, a 16-year-old female and a 2-year-old female—were all properly restrained and either were not injured or sustained minor injuries, according to CHP.
The Mercedes was driven by a 52-year-old Oakdale woman. She and her 53-year-old passenger, also from Oakdale, both had major injuries and were taken to local hospitals. CHP said both were wearing seat belts.
CHP’s preliminary investigation indicates the Porsche was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking the pickup, triggering the chain-reaction crash. Investigators also believe alcohol may have been a factor, though authorities are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results before making a final determination.
Because the Porsche driver died in the crash, no criminal charges are expected. Ladd Road was closed for approximately two and a half hours while officials investigated. The investigation remains ongoing.

WINTON, CA – On July 3rd in Winton, a bicyclist was arrested on suspicion of riding under the influence after a CHP Merced Area officer reportedly saw the rider carrying an open can of Budweiser beer, per a report from CHP Merced.
CHP reported that Officer Partida observed the bicyclist riding through Winton while holding the open beer can. The traffic stop led to an investigation of possible DUI, and the rider was subsequently arrested on suspicion of riding a bicycle while under the influence of alcohol.
The agency said the incident serves as a reminder that California’s DUI laws are not limited to motorists. Under California Vehicle Code Section 21200.5, it is unlawful to ride a bicycle on a public street while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both. It increases the risk of injury to the bicyclist, nearby pedestrians, and even to drivers, who may be forced to swerve if an intoxicated cyclist drifts into a driving lane.
