Wrong-Way Driver Arrested for DUI Before Entering I-5 near Florin Road in South Sacramento

A wrong-way driver arrested for DUI before entering I-5 near Florin Road in South Sacramento. On Saturday, June 6, 2026, a potentially deadly wrong-way driving incident was prevented in South Sacramento when California Highway Patrol officers stopped an allegedly impaired driver before she could enter Interstate 5, according to CHP officials.

Officers Observe Vehicle Traveling Up Off-Ramp

The incident occurred at approximately 11:12 p.m. near the Florin Road interchange with Interstate 5.

According to CHP, South Sacramento area officers observed a vehicle traveling northbound on the southbound Florin Road off-ramp, placing the driver on a direct path toward entering the freeway against traffic.

Recognizing the immediate danger, officers conducted an enforcement stop before the vehicle could enter I-5 in the wrong direction.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

After contacting the driver, officers determined she was allegedly driving under the influence. CHP said the woman was arrested for DUI and subsequently booked into the Sacramento County Jail.

Authorities have not released the driver’s identity or additional details regarding the arrest.

Wrong-Way Driving Remains a Serious Highway Safety Concern

Wrong-way driving incidents are among the most dangerous events that occur on California roadways. Head-on collisions resulting from wrong-way drivers often occur at high speeds and can lead to catastrophic or fatal injuries.

Alcohol impairment continues to be one of the leading factors in wrong-way driving crashes. Quick intervention by law enforcement in this case may have prevented a serious collision from occurring on Interstate 5.

DUI Prevention Saves Lives

Driving under the influence significantly impairs judgment, reaction time, coordination, and decision-making abilities. Law enforcement agencies throughout California continue to emphasize the importance of planning ahead by using designated drivers, rideshare services, public transportation, or other safe alternatives when consuming alcohol or drugs.

Navigating the Aftermath of a Reckless or Impaired Driving Crash

Surviving a collision with an impaired or reckless driver is a life-altering experience. In an instant, a negligent driver’s poor choices can shatter your health, financial stability, and peace of mind.
