CHP said officers received reports at approximately 1:45 p.m. of a vehicle submerged in the Delta-Mendota Canal. Emergency personnel, including dive teams, responded to the scene and began search and recovery efforts.
Authorities worked for several hours before the vehicle was successfully removed from the canal shortly after 5:30 p.m.
Driver Pronounced Dead
Investigators confirmed that a woman was found inside the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
At this time, CHP officials do not suspect foul play in connection with the incident.
Road Closure Implemented During Recovery Efforts
As emergency crews conducted recovery operations and investigated the crash, Howard Road was closed between Interstate 5 and Stark Road. The closure remained in effect for several hours while responders worked at the scene.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led the vehicle to enter the canal. No information has been released regarding whether a medical emergency, mechanical failure, or other factors may have contributed to the crash.
Water-Related Vehicle Crashes Present Unique Dangers
Vehicles that leave the roadway and enter canals, rivers, or other bodies of water can create life-threatening situations within seconds. Rapid submersion often limits escape opportunities, making prompt emergency response critical. Investigators typically examine roadway conditions, driver actions, and vehicle performance to determine the cause of these incidents.
