Two Teenage Girls Killed in Fiery Crash Near Rancho Murieta

Two teenage girls killed in fiery crash near Rancho Murieta lost their lives and three other juveniles suffered serious injuries following a solo-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, May 17, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Vehicle Crashed Into Tree and Caught Fire

The collision happened at around 12:30 a.m. on Scott Road near Latrobe Road. The Sacramento Fire District crews responded to the scene and found a vehicle engulfed in flames after it crashed into a tree.

CHP said the driver, a 16-year-old girl, and a 14-year-old front passenger died as a result of the crash. Their identities have not yet been publicly released.

Three Other Teenagers Seriously Injured

Authorities reported that three additional passengers were able to escape the burning vehicle with assistance from passing motorists. All three suffered serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

CHP identified two of the injured victims as Pleasant Grove High School students, ages 16 and 15. The age of the third injured passenger has not yet been disclosed.

Counseling Services Offered for Students and Staff

In response to the tragedy, Elk Grove Unified School District announced that grief counselors would be available at Elk Grove High School, Albiani Middle School, and Pleasant Grove High School to support students and staff affected by the crash.

Speed Believed to Be a Factor

Investigators stated that speed appears to have contributed to the collision. Authorities are also continuing to investigate whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role.

High-Speed Crashes Can Have Devastating Consequences

Speed-related collisions significantly increase the risk of catastrophic injuries and fatalities, particularly among young drivers. Drivers are encouraged to obey posted speed limits, remain focused behind the wheel, and avoid risky driving behaviors that can lead to tragedy.
