TUOLUMNE COUNTY, CA – Two individuals were seriously injured early Saturday morning in Tuolumne County after their vehicle went off the side of New Priest Grade Road (Highway 120), according to authorities. The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. on April 19 and brought a swift response from multiple emergency agencies, including the Tuolumne County Fire Department, Cal Fire, and other crews.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle roughly 200 feet down a steep embankment. Reaching the occupants required careful effort, as rescue teams used a rope system to safely access and bring both individuals back up the hillside.
Once they were retrieved, the two patients were airlifted by helicopter to trauma centers in the Central Valley, where they could receive urgent medical care.
Details about the severity of their injuries have not yet been released. Several agencies assisted in the response, including the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, Caltrans, PHI Air Medical, and CAL STAR. STANISLAUS COUNTY, CA — A 44-year-old man lost his life in a tragic crash this morning on Interstate 5 north of Stuhr Road near the cities of Modesto and Newman, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said the man was driving a 2004 Ford SUV northbound around 10:40 a.m. when, for reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle veered into the center median and overturned. The SUV ultimately came to rest on its roof along the southbound shoulder. Investigators have not yet determined how fast the vehicle was traveling or which lane it was in at the time.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 32-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle suffered major injuries. She was airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
Authorities confirmed that both occupants were wearing seat belts. It is still unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, and no other vehicles were involved.
The incident continues to impact traffic in both directions along I-5 as CHP works to understand what led to this heartbreaking event.
