Three Big Rigs Involved in Fog-Related Crash on I-5 Near Elk Grove

Three big rigs involved in fog-related crash on I-5 near Elk Grove early Thursday morning, February 5, 2026, amid extremely dense fog conditions in the Sacramento Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred on northbound Interstate 5 near Twin Cities Road, just south of Elk Grove, and significantly impacted traffic during the morning commute.

What Happened

CHP officials reported that one big rig began slowing for reasons that remain unclear. Due to severely reduced visibility, a second big rig was unable to slow down in time. The second truck attempted to veer left but struck the left rear of the first big rig. The impact caused the second big rig’s cab to overturn and crash into the center divide.

A third big rig was subsequently struck by debris from the collision. CHP also confirmed that approximately 75 gallons of fuel spilled from the overturned truck into the center divide area.

Fog Conditions and Traffic Impact

The crash occurred during a period of extreme fog throughout the Sacramento Valley. Visibility dropped below a quarter mile in many areas, with some locations reporting near-zero visibility. A Dense Fog Advisory remained in effect through noon Thursday.

Northbound I-5 lanes were impacted for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage, spilled fuel, and debris from the roadway.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the first big rig to slow down. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Driver Safety Tips

Dense fog significantly increases the risk of serious collisions, particularly for large commercial vehicles. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance, use low-beam headlights, and avoid sudden maneuvers when visibility is limited. If conditions become too dangerous, safely exiting the roadway may be the safest option.
