Life-Threatening Injuries Reported in Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Highway 20 in Nevada County
Serious chain-reaction crashes on Highway 20 in Nevada County left one driver with life-threatening injuries and caused multiple minor crashes Friday morning, November 21, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first crash occurred around 8:00 a.m. when a Volkswagen rear-ended a semi-truck between Grass Valley and Penn Valley. Shortly after, a second crash occurred as drivers attempted to avoid the initial scene.
The Volkswagen driver was trapped in the vehicle and required extrication. They were transported by air ambulance to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
During the resulting traffic slowdown, two additional minor crashes were reported in the area. No other serious injuries were confirmed.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial collision and the subsequent incidents.
Traffic Safety Reminder: Avoiding Chain-Reaction Accidents
Highway slowdowns can quickly lead to multi-vehicle collisions. To reduce risk:
- Maintain a safe following distance—rear-end collisions are the most common type of highway crash.
- Stay alert to sudden stops ahead, especially near construction zones or accident scenes.
- Reduce speed gradually when approaching traffic congestion.
- Avoid distractions, including mobile devices, eating, or adjusting your stereo.
- Use hazard lights if you must slow down quickly to warn drivers behind you.
Practicing these safety measures can help prevent chain-reaction crashes and protect yourself and others on the road.
