Fatal Cement Explosion Occurs Near Boeing Avenue Involving Construction Worker

A Chico construction worker was killed on October 21 in a cement explosion that involved a concrete mixer close to the airport. Officers with the Chico Police Department responded to an emergency call around 3:49 p.m. at a construction project near Boeing Avenue. When they arrived, along with Butte medics, they discovered an unresponsive man close to a concrete pumping truck.

Deceased Man Worked at the Cohasset Road Widening Project

Although lifesaving measures were performed to save the man’s life, efforts by the first responders were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The decedent was reportedly a construction worker employed at the widening project on Cohasset Road.

Clogged Pipe May Have Caused Cement Explosion

Investigators into the deadly incident are determining what the cause of the cement explosion was; however, it is believed a clogged pipe in the cement truck led to the accident. The identity of the deceased man has not been released pending notification of family members by the coroner’s office.

Explosions Involving Cement Trucks

Cement trucks are big vehicles designed to transport large amounts of cement powder. The powder is a highly combustible material, and if it becomes airborne, it can easily ignite and cause a cement explosion. There are several potential causes of explosions involving cement trucks.

  • A potential cause of an explosion involving a cement truck is a problem with the truck’s mixer. The mixer is what helps to keep the cement powder in suspension so that it doesn’t settle to the bottom of the truck. If there is a problem with the mixer, it can cause the cement powder to become unsettled and fall out of the truck. Once the powder is on the ground, it can easily become airborne and ignite.
  • Evaporating water inside a cement mixer can heat up and expand, trapping it inside and resulting in an explosion.
  • An issue with the truck’s loading and unloading process can cause an explosion. If the cement powder is not properly loaded into the truck, it can become airborne and ignite. Additionally, if the cement powder is not properly unloaded from the truck, it can also become airborne and ignite.

Who Can Be Held Liable in a Cement Truck Explosion Fatality Accident?

Liability in a cement truck explosion accident can fall on a number of different parties. If the accident was caused by defective brakes or a problem with the truck’s mixer, the manufacturer might be held liable. If the accident was caused by an issue with the loading or unloading process, the company responsible for performing this job may be held liable. In some cases, the driver of the cement truck may be responsible if it is determined that he or she was negligent in operating the vehicle.

If you have lost a loved one in an accident involving a cement truck, it is important to contact an experienced accident attorney to discuss your legal options. An experienced lawyer can help you to determine who may be held liable for your loved one’s death and can help you to pursue the compensation that you deserve.
