LATHROP, CA — A 13-year-old girl was hurt and a 19-year-old woman was taken into custody on Friday following a hit-and-run incident in Lathrop, according to the Lathrop Police Department.
Officers were called to the area near Mossdale Elementary School around 7:43 a.m. after receiving reports that a young pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
Police said the girl had been crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit. The driver did not stop to help and left the scene immediately.
The child suffered soreness on the left side of her body and in her foot but is expected to recover.
With the help of community witnesses, home security footage, and police surveillance technology, investigators were able to identify the driver.
According to police, the 19-year-old woman later admitted to being involved in the collision, as well as to driving without a license or insurance. She was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on felony hit-and-run charges.
Police are reminding all drivers to slow down, stay attentive, and always watch carefully for children and pedestrians near schools.
