Humboldt County Plane Crash Occurs in Ocean Near Mal Coombs Park
A Humboldt County plane crash off the coast of Shelter Cove has left one man dead and another critically injured after a small aircraft went down in the ocean on the afternoon of August 17. According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at around 3:21 p.m. to reports of an aircraft accident near Mal Coombs Park. Witnesses stated the plane crashed approximately 100 yards offshore shortly after taking off from Shelter Cove Airport.
Emergency Crews Rescue Two Men After Humboldt County Plane Crash
Emergency crews from CalFire, Shelter Cove, and the Coast Guard rushed to the scene. Firefighters from Shelter Cove arrived first, and found the two adult male occupants in the water. Both men had managed to exit the plane before rescue. Firefighters deployed into the water and recovered the two men, immediately providing medical care.
Identities of Men in Humboldt County Plane Crash to Be Released
One man was stabilized and flown by air ambulance to an out-of-area hospital with major injuries. The second man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of the family. Preliminary investigation suggests that the aircraft took off from the local airport, turned west, and quickly plunged into the ocean.
Authorities Determining Cause of Plane Crash
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is working alongside the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to determine the crash’s cause, which remains under investigation.
