MODESTO, CA – A terrifying moment for a Modesto family turned into a heartwarming act of kindness — all thanks to some quick-thinking parents and thoughtful firefighters.
The incident occurred near Fifth and I streets, where a motorcycle and a vehicle collided, sending the motorcyclist flying off course and onto a nearby sidewalk — directly toward a family that was out enjoying a walk together. In a split second, the alert parents were able to pull their children out of harm’s way. However, the motorcycle struck and destroyed a child’s scooter.
The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the family, shaken but unharmed, declined medical treatment at the scene.
It was a frightening event to be sure, but what happened next brought an unexpected moment of light.
Noticing the broken scooter after the crash, firefighters from the Modesto Fire Department took it upon themselves to do something special. That same night, they returned to the family’s home carrying a brand new scooter and helmet for the child.
“We’re an all-risk fire department that responds to all types of emergencies,” said MFD spokesman Capt. Joe Spani. “We often meet people on the worst days of their lives — whether it’s a car crash, a fire, or a medical crisis. So when we get the chance to bring even a small bit of joy during those moments, it means a lot to us too.”
The gesture left a lasting impression on the family — and served as a powerful reminder of the compassion and care that first responders bring to our communities, even after the sirens fade.

LIVINGSTON, CA – A tragic wrong-way crash early Monday morning on Highway 99 claimed the life of a 21-year-old Elk Grove man and left four of his young passengers injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 2:12 a.m. just south of Hammatt Avenue, when CHP officers from the Merced Communication Center were called to the scene of a head-on crash involving three vehicles.
Authorities say the Elk Grove man was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu northbound on southbound Highway 99 when he crashed head-on into a Toyota Camry driven by a 41-year-old man from San Bernardino. The impact forced the Malibu into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, whose driver was unable to stop in time to avoid the crash.
The young driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene. His four passengers — all between the ages of 19 and 21 — were transported to the hospital with injuries. Thankfully, the drivers of the Camry and the tractor-trailer were not hurt, according to CHP.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. At this time, it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
This heartbreaking incident has left a community grieving the loss of a young life and hoping for the recovery of those injured.
