Update on Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Pittsburg

I’m Ed Smith, a Pittsburg CA Personal Injury Lawyer. Recently, I reported on a pedestrian accident that happened on Wednesday, September 13th, 2017, where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Railroad Avenue near Marks Boulevard. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead. Since the time of my previous report, more details regarding the driver have surfaced. Additional details regarding the pedestrian accident appear below.

New Information

The Pittsburg Police Department released a follow-up report on the accident in Contra Costa County, and it indicates that the collision was a hit-and-run. The driver is heading over to the county jail after striking the pedestrian and fleeing the scene before the police arrived. Pittsburg police responded to the incident and arrived at the southbound lanes of Railroad Avenue just moments before 6:00 a.m. The pedestrian’s identity has now been released to the public. She was a 40-year old Pittsburg resident named Alana Willis. Sadly, Alana sustained severe injuries following the impact of the car, and major life-saving tactics were attempted to save her life. Despite these attempts, Alana passed away due to her injuries.

We extend our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ms. Willis during this very difficult time.

Hit and Run Driver

Shortly after the tragedy, police were on a mission to find the hit-and-run driver. Within that same day, they were able to locate the car that was involved and then found the driver. The driver has since been identified as 29-year old Angelia Spikes, and police who are investigating the accident have reported that she has since been cooperative with the investigation. Angelia has been arrested and was due to be admitted into the Martinez County Jail on Wednesday, September 13th, 2017. She is being held in the county jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

Following the pedestrian accident, police immediately closed down the Southbound roads of Railroad Avenue early on the morning of September 17th, 2017. They were officially reopened to traffic later on that afternoon. The reason for the collision still remains under investigation.

Tips to Improve Pedestrian Safety

To increase pedestrian safety requires action from both pedestrians and drivers. Both parties have to take different safety precautions to improve this issue.

Practices for pedestrian include the following:

  • Make yourself visible as much as possible. This can be done by making eye contact with drivers, and also by wearing bright colored or highly reflective clothing.
  • Walk in safe spaces only.  Use crosswalks when crossing a street, and stay on the sidewalk at all possible chances.
  • Follow the rules of the road. Make sure you understand and practice all traffic rules, including street signs and traffic signals

Safety measures for drivers:

  • Pay attention. Always be on the lookout for pedestrians while you’re driving, and never let your guard down.
  • Be cautious when approaching crosswalks. Decrease your speed and be prepared to stop for any pedestrians in a crosswalk.
  • Don’t drive while intoxicated. Drugs have been proven to reduce your reaction time, decision-making skills, and your overall mental functioning.
