Marysville Suspected DUI Crash Victim Saved

I’m Ed Smith, a Marysville personal injury lawyer. A family in Marysville has been giving their thanks to emergency responders in Sutter County for saving their daughter after she was trapped underwater and nearly drowned as the result of a suspected DUI auto accident.

Accident Details

The accident happened in the early morning of Saturday, May 20, 2017, near Yuba City on Clements Road close to the intersection of Franklin Road at the north side of the street. According to reports from responding officers, the vehicle that the young woman was riding in drove off of the roadway and overturned, eventually landing upside down in a canal off of the side of the road.

It was discovered that the driver of the car was a 27-year-old male friend of the rescued woman and that they had been leaving a friend’s party when the accident occurred.

Police Response and Rescue

Police initially received a report indicating that an accident had left a vehicle overturned in the canal. When responding officers arrived at the scene of the collision, they found the driver of the car near the crash and his clothes were soaking wet. The driver told officers that he had merely gone for a late night swim and made no reference to the crash nor any indication that his passenger had been injured or possibly killed.

Upon investigating the wrecked vehicle, one officer reported that he heard a person breathing and immediately jumped into the 5-foot-deep irrigation canal to assist the trapped person. Officers believe that the woman had attempted to swim upward through the trunk of the vehicle in order to breathe before she nearly drowned.

Just in Time

Emergency medical responders reported that after the woman was removed from the vehicle, a process that officers indicated had taken about three and a half minutes, she had no recognizable pulse and had stopped breathing entirely. However, the responders worked quickly and efficiently and were able to resuscitate the victim. After vital signs were restored, the woman was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and placed in an intensive care unit.

Family Response

The woman’s family has expressed their gratitude to the first responders who saved their daughter’s. The mother of the rescued woman expressed that the officer who jumped into the water to save her daughter was a selfless hero.

Suspected DUI

Officers noted in their report that when they encountered the driver of the vehicle, he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested and is set to be arraigned on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, for a felony charge of driving under the influence. Officers have also suggested that the driver’s charges may be enhanced. The collision remains under investigation.
