2018 Project for Road Improvement on Highway 4

I’m Ed Smith, a Brentwood personal injury attorney. There is great news for those of you that drive on Highway 4 for short or long-distance commutes. There is a project underway to significantly improve road infrastructure. The estimated time of completion is the end of 2018.

Construction Improvement Details

Construction workers are planning on erecting tall beams or girders, in addition to constructing a new bridge that will pass over Balfour Road in lieu of the signalized intersection that currently resides near Balfour Road and Highway 4. This move will permit one lane for both westbound and eastbound traffic to bypass the signal at Highway 4/Balfour Road traveling towards Discovery Bay and Byron. Once they erect the girders, the next step is to work above the girders to start assembling the roadway that traffic will be moving over.

Project Cost

All good ideas come at a cost – for this project, it is a whopping sum of $73 million. This roadway improvement plan is expected to be completed before 2019. The plan aims to reduce congested traffic conditions as well as increasing roadway safety for all motorists.

Pushing traffic over Balfour Road will allow a more continuous flow of vehicle movement, eliminating the constant brake halts that some commuters currently face. Additionally, removing the at-grade intersection is also an effort intent on creating a safer driving environment.

The second expectation of this project is to build two bridges going over Deer Creek. The first bridge will be installed nearby Sand Creek and Balfour Road, whereas the second one will be used as an on-ramp that takes drivers from Balfour to the eastbound lanes of Highway 4.

By June of 2018, construction crews are anticipating that motorists traveling from Sand Creek will have the option of going over Balfour if they would like to continue eastbound for Stockton. The road design work for the other direction of the road will be done sometime in the following month.

This project is one of the last in a chain of planned ventures aimed at easing traffic congestion in the East Bay. More funding will be necessary in order to complete all current plans for road infrastructure improvement. So far the completed projects are as follows: Adding two lanes on Highway 4 from Lone Tree to Sand Creek Road, adding an interchange and an under crossing on Sand Creek Road, and installation of connector ramps in both directions from Highway 4 to Highway 160.
