Young Girl Dies in Redding Car Accident

According to official reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a young girl was fatally injured in a Redding area car accident on Sunday, July 28, 2019. The decedent has been identified as the 9-year-old girl and daughter of MaryAnn Knutson, who was also seriously injured during the accident. Additionally, two other children suffered injuries, one sustaining severe trauma. The incident remains under investigation by CHP. I wish to express my sincere condolences to the Knutson family and everyone whose life has been affected by this terrible accident.

Crash Details

Police say that the accident happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. near the community of Palo Cedro just a few miles east of the city of Redding. The unidentified woman had been driving a Ford Excursion SUV on Old Forty-Four Drive, otherwise known as Millville Road.

Police say that the SUV was traveling westbound at around 70 miles an hour when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle on the road. When the SUV returned to its lane, the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle veered to the left, crossed over oncoming lanes, and drove off of the south side of the road. The SUV reportedly crashed through a fence and traveled into a nearby pasture where it eventually overturned, rolling several times before finally coming to a rest on its wheels.

Injuries

Emergency responders were dispatched to the site of the collision immediately after CHP was notified. When they arrived at the crash site, medical officials say that they found a 9-year-old girl had suffered critical injuries. The young girl was tragically declared deceased on-site.

Knutson was found with a serious spinal injury and was taken to the Redding Mercy Medical Center where her husband happened to be working in the emergency room at the time. Reports indicated that Knutson’s injury may leave her unable to walk. A second child, identified as a 3-year-old girl, suffered a broken femur during the accident. A third child, identified as a 6-year-old girl, suffered minor injuries during the accident.

Fundraiser

Community members have started a fundraiser in order to benefit the Knutson family during this difficult time. If you would like to donate, you can find the fundraiser by following this link.

Rollover Accidents

Accidents in which vehicles overturn are some of the most dangerous crashes that can happen. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these types of accidents have a higher fatality rate than nearly every other type of collision. One of the reasons that these accidents are so dangerous is that many vehicles are not strong enough to withstand them. Often, vehicle roofs are overlooked when companies are testing the safety of their vehicles. This can cause the metal to buckle and cause roof crush injuries in the event of a rollover.

Vehicle manufacturers are expected to ensure that their products are safe. For this reason, manufacturers may be liable to pay for damages when a vehicle overturns. However, the specific payments available vary for each case, so it is best to speak to a Redding injury lawyer to get advice.

Contacting a Lawyer

After a fatal crash, it is common for families to feel overwhelmed by grief. The grieving process is often complicated and can make it hard for individuals to meet the demands of their daily life. However, it is important not to let this keep you from getting the legal help you need in order to claim the compensation you deserve. A good attorney will listen compassionately to your case and give you the advice you need to recover for your financial and personal losses.
