Accident on El Dorado Freeway Caused by Wrong-Way Driver

A wrong-way crash occurred east of Placerville on the El Dorado Freeway on November 28 that resulted in minor injuries. The accident happened along U.S. 50 near Schnell School Road around 9:20 p.m., according to a report by Caltrans. Two people were transported to a hospital with injuries described as minor as well as another patient who was treated and released at the scene by medics with the El Dorado Fire Protection District.

Authorities Investigating Cause of Wrong-Way Crash

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the westbound lanes of El Dorado Freeway remained closed down for about 30 minutes while an investigation was conducted and the scene cleared. No information was provided on whether the wrong-way driver was placed under arrest or impaired at the time of the accident.

Causes of a Wrong-Way Crash

Wrong-way accidents can occur due to a variety of reasons. Common causes for a wrong-way collision include the following:

  • Driver impairment: A significant portion of wrong-way collisions are caused by impaired driving. Impaired drivers may not be able to accurately gauge their speed or direction, leading them to drive the wrong way on the highway. This is especially common late at night when many drunk and impaired drivers are on the roads.
  • Unfamiliarity with roads and signage: Drivers who frequently travel through unfamiliar areas may be more likely to make wrong turns due to inadequate signs or unclear instructions on where they should go. Even when signage or instructions are clearly marked, drivers may make a wrong turn due to confusion. When bad or misplaced signage leads to a wrong-way crash, the government entity in charge may be liable for accident injuries. Because the injured party has only six months to file a claim, getting help from an accident attorney can be recommended.
  • Road conditions: Poorly maintained roads may also contribute to wrong-way accidents. If the pavement is damaged or there are objects in the road that cause drivers to swerve, they could end up going the wrong way on the highway.
  • Distraction: Distracted driving is another major contributor to wrong-way collisions. When drivers fail to pay attention while behind the wheel, they can be easily confused and make mistakes, such as entering an exit instead of an entrance ramp, which can lead to deadly consequences.

Using Caution to Prevent a Wrong-Way Crash

A preventable tragedy like a wrong-way collision can have long-lasting effects on all involved. Taking steps to reduce the potential causes of wrong-way collisions is essential to ensuring everyone’s safety on the roads.  Drivers should always practice defensive driving and familiarize themselves with their routes before getting behind the wheel. Motorists should also be aware of other drivers and check for signs of impairment or distraction when sharing the road. Furthermore, keeping roads well-lit, clearly marked and free from debris can help decrease the chances of a motorist driving in the wrong direction.
