Causes of a Head-On Crash

There are a number of reasons why head-on collisions occur. These include:

  • Improper passing on a two-lane road: Passing too slowly on a two-lane road or doing so in a poorly lit area or by crossing a double-yellow line can lead to head-on collisions. When the view is obstructed up ahead, or a driver thinks they can pass safely even though another vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, they are taking a dangerous risk.
  • Speeding: A driver who speeds around a curve can lose control of their vehicle and end up in the opposing lane, which can lead to a head-on collision.
  • Distracted driving: Driving distracted by a phone call, text message, or conversation with a passenger can result in a crash. It takes only a few seconds to move into the opposing lane after looking away.
  • Wrong-way driving: A driver can cause a head-on crash when he goes the wrong way on a one-way street or takes the incorrect entrance ramp when going onto a freeway. These incidents are often the result of someone who is drunk or has been using drugs.
  • Fatigue: A driver whose fatigue makes them unable to safely operate a vehicle can cause serious accidents. Driving while fatigued is just as dangerous as while impaired. Dozing off or resting their eyes are common causes of accidents involving fatigued drivers. One of the major problems is that a driver often doesn’t realize they are too tired to be behind the wheel of a car until it’s too late.
  • Driving while drunk is dangerous because impaired cognition and reflexes can lead to a loss of control. Their behavior, such as weaving in and out of their lane, failing to judge their distance from other vehicles, and even falling asleep while driving, puts other drivers at risk.

An injury lawyer can determine which driver/drivers were at fault for an accident. In this way, the injured party can file a claim to recover compensation to obtain the expenses for their medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
