This injury occurs when the arm is extended, and a strong force is applied to the end of the arm that pushes the radial head out of the elbow. Think about a parent who rapidly whips the arm of their child or someone who falls with their arm outstretched. The ligament that protects the head of the radius at the elbow joint is thin in children. This means that it is easier to remove the head of the radius from the joint.
Correction of a Nursemaid’s Elbow
When someone has suffered a dislocation of the radial head, it needs to be corrected before permanent damage occurs. When the head of the radius moves out of place, the bone could transect one of the arteries, veins, or nerves running through the elbow. This could lead to severe complications. To fix this injury, a doctor moves the arm in the opposite direction of the dislocating force, putting it back in place. In some cases, this is unsuccessful, and it needs to be reduced in an operating room.
