Vallejo To Conduct Pedestrian Safety Operation

In recent years, Vallejo has seen a high number of serious pedestrian-involved auto accidents, and city officials are planning an operation to combat the dangerous trend. Vallejo Police Department (VPD) will be conducting a pedestrian safety operation on Friday, December 13, 2019, using funds provided through the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). VPD Lt. Michael Nichelini announced the operation on Monday, December 9, 2019, stating that police would focus on educating pedestrians and drivers on the traffic laws that are meant to keep them safe while using city roads. The operation will reportedly also include increased enforcement of pedestrian violations.

Enforcing Safety Laws

Nichelini noted that VPD officers will be looking out for illegal and dangerous violations committed by both pedestrians and drivers. He added that “special attention” would be aimed at “drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, speeding, performing illegal turns, not stopping at signals and signs and any other traffic violations.” Nichelini also noted that officers would stop pedestrians illegally crossing streets as well as those who are distracted while walking or fail to yield the right-of-way to drivers when they should.

Nichelini said in a press release regarding the operation that drivers and pedestrians share equal responsibility for roadway safety and that both should be looking out for one another while using local roads.

Recent Rise in Pedestrian Accidents

In 2018, VPD reportedly investigated five separate deadly pedestrian accidents, and across the state, these collisions are increasing quickly. Research shows that between 2012 and 2016, the average number of fatal pedestrian accidents in California increased by 33 percent.

Because of this dramatic increase, VPD has shown support for the new OTS campaign for public awareness. The campaign, called “Go Safely, California” is a multi-pronged effort aimed at increasing pedestrian safety across the state as well as providing an educational resource for Californians on the go. Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Pedestrian Injuries

Pedestrians are very vulnerable and aren’t protected by steel walls, airbags, seatbelts, or other safety features. This means that they are often seriously hurt even in low-speed accidents. These injuries can require multiple medical procedures that are often very expensive. On top of this, injured pedestrians often need to go through physical therapy and/or take medication for a long period of time. Furthermore, being injured can leave you unable to work, making financial issues seem even more overwhelming. However, injured pedestrians can get help by reaching out to a Vallejo personal injury lawyer. A good lawyer will be able to help you understand your options for claiming compensation for your losses from negligent parties and/or insurance companies.
