Vacaville DUI Statistics

I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville personal injury lawyer. The holiday season may be over, but drivers should remain careful while navigating the roadways, especially in light of all this rain. Those planning on driving frequently in coming weeks may be interested in the Vacaville DUI statistics discussed below.

DUI in Vacaville

In Vacaville, over the ten-year period spanning from the beginning of 2007 to the end of 2016, there were 321 separate vehicle collisions caused by DUI that resulted in traumatic injuries ranging in severity from minor to fatal. Of these 321 crashes, 18 involved street pedestrians, 14 involved cyclists, and 28 involved motorcycles, and the remaining 271 involved only either large trucks or normal passenger vehicles. Slightly less than one-third of the crashes happened on a state highway within Vacaville city limits.

Over the duration of this time period, drunk drivers were responsible for nearly ten percent of auto accidents in the city. This means that DUI was the fourth most common primary cause of collisions behind speeding, improper turning, and right-of-way violations respectively.

Severity

One thing that the data makes very clear is that when alcohol is involved in a car crash, the injuries sustained are much more likely to be severe or fatal in nature. Vacaville’s DUIs over the past ten years have had a fatality rate of 4.36 percent while the fatality rate for accidents without alcohol is 1.47. This shows that an accident in which a driver is intoxicated is three times more likely to involve a fatal injury.

The numbers for severe injuries are even more drastic. 14.33 percent of Vacaville DUI crashes involve severe injury while non-DUI crashes only cause severe injuries 3.9 percent of the time. This indicates that a person involved in a Vacaville crash is more than ten times more likely to sustain severe trauma if a driver is intoxicated.

Common Types of DUI accident

The most common type of accident that DUIs result in Vacaville is hit-object collisions. DUI accidents in which a vehicle struck a stationary object accounted for around 29 percent of injury-related Vacaville DUI crashes. The next most common accident type was rear-end accidents at 27 percent. After this, no accident types are extreme outliers and range from 12.5 percent with pedestrian collisions being the least common.

Accidents not involving DUI saw a much lower rate of hit objects with only about 14 percent of non-DUI crashes being hit-object collisions.
