Ukiah Area Rollover Results in Major Injuries

One person was seriously injured in a Ukiah area rollover that took place on Thursday, April 9, 2020. The accident was reported by California Highway Patrol (CHP) during the evening and reportedly involved a single-vehicle. At least one individual was transported to a trauma center via helicopter ambulance to receive emergency treatment. Additionally, the collision is still actively being investigated.

Crash Details

The crash occurred at around 4:20 p.m. on State Route 128 near Philo Greenwood Road a few miles to the west of the city of Ukiah. According to CHP reports, a single-vehicle overturned for unknown reasons, ejecting one individual through a window. Police indicated that the ejected individual was found in the road and that both lanes of the highway were blocked by the wreck.

Response Officers arrived at the scene at around 4:45 p.m., at which time officers requested a helicopter ambulance. Traffic was reportedly stopped completely in both directions while accident response was underway. At about 6:30 p.m., medical officials at the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital confirmed that the injured party had suffered major trauma during the crash.

Investigation

As police continue to investigate what may have caused this accident, there have not yet been reports regarding suspected factors. Single-vehicle crashes happen often and can be caused by more than one thing. In many accidents, there are factors that drivers have no control over, like malfunctioning car parts or dangerous issues with the road.

Rollover Collisions

According to information reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rollover crashes have a higher chance of causing fatal or serious injuries than most other types of collisions. The NHTSA’s data indicates that rollovers account for about ten percent of deadly car crashes while only two out of every hundred crashes involved an overturned car.

One of the most important reasons that rollovers cause such serious trauma is that many vehicles have weak or poorly designed roofs that are unable to withstand major impacts. If the vehicle roof crumples during a rollover, it is liable to cave in on passengers and/or drivers, causing them severe injuries. The companies that make these vehicles are responsible for the safety of their products and are often liable in cases involving roof crush injuries.
