Uber Accidents: What You Need to Know

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Uber car accident lawyer. While using a ride-sharing company such as Uber can be a handy way to travel, accidents do happen. When ride-sharing accidents occur, I am here to answer your questions.

Uber Car Accidents in 2017

In May at Lakeville, California, an Uber driver, carrying a passenger, drove into a sinkhole that had been caused by a broken water pipe. Fortunately, there were no injuries. In March, 2017, a Georgia Uber driver was charged with vehicular homicide after driving drunk and killing a 54-year-old pedestrian. In Seattle in March, an Uber driver in a Nissan struck a Honda Accord, cutting it in half. The Nissan then proceeded for two blocks, carrying a passenger, and exploded when it crashed into a gas station pump. A New York Uber driver was arrested in January after killing a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

What If I’m Hurt as a Passenger in an Uber in Sacramento?

Under Cal. Pub. Util. Code § 5433(b)(1), companies that offer ride sharing are required to carry $1 million in insurance to cover passengers and an equal amount in the event of an accident with an uninsured/underinsured motorist. If the driver is not transporting a passenger when a crash occurs, the amount of insurance coverage required is lower. The driver must carry $50,000 coverage per person for injury or a death, along with $30,000 to cover property damage and $100,000 per incident for personal injuries or deaths. The company itself is also required to carry $200,000 in liability insurance for when the driver does not have a customer on-board.

As demonstrated by some of the Uber accidents that have occurred in 2017, terrible injuries and deaths can be caused in ride-sharing accidents, just as they can when you are driving your own vehicle. From traumatic brain injuries to spinal injuries that cause chronic pain and require a long recuperative period. Recovering associated financial loss is possible, just as it is in any other motor vehicle accident.

A person who is injured because of negligence by another person faces not only high medical bills but also lost time from work and other expenses. When the injuries are significant, that person may never be able to return to the life they had before. Calling an injury lawyer experienced in handling Uber car accidents is the first step to recovering damages.
