Traffic Accident Near Stockton Boulevard Involves Multiple Vehicles

A highway accident involving multiple vehicles on March 27 in Sacramento resulted in four people being transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. The collision happened shortly before 1:00 in the afternoon along westbound U.S. 50 just east of the Stockton Boulevard off-ramp. The accident blocked three lanes of the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) police report, and at least several vehicles had to be removed from the scene by tow trucks.

Authorities Investigating to Determine What Caused the Highway Accident

The accident reportedly involved an Acura MDX, Ford pickup, Nissan Sentra, and Honda Civic with possible others. According to police, traffic was very heavy at the time, and medics with the Sacramento Fire Department were called to the scene to assess any injuries in the crash. Four patients were transported to a nearby hospital for additional evaluation and/or treatment. The highway accident is under investigation by authorities to determine what happened to cause it.

Multiple Vehicle Highway Accident

A multiple-vehicle accident on a busy, traffic-intense highway is exceptionally dangerous. This is because vehicles are traveling at a higher rate of speed than they would on urban streets. The speed alone causes more serious injuries and fatalities. In addition, the highways are crowded, which prevents drivers from evading a crash as vehicles enter adjacent lanes.

Why Do Multiple-Vehicle Accidents Happen?

There are a number of reasons that multiple-vehicle accidents occur on highways. The most common involves the following:

  • Rear-end accidents: Clearly, the most common type of accident that occurs involves one vehicle striking the rear of another. This can be caused by a number of reasons. However, the impact often pushes the vehicle into others, causing a multiple-vehicle highway accident.
  • Distracted driving: In today’s multitasking world, many drivers try to do other tasks instead of focusing on the road. These can include using a cell phone, texting, accessing GPS, or even applying makeup.
  • Drunk driving: Operating a motor vehicle when inebriated can cause a lack of judgment, reflex impairment, or attentional defects. All of these can lead to a multiple-vehicle highway accident.
  • Fatigue: Drivers are often too fatigued to drive. Yet, due to responsibilities and job security, they must. Even closing your eyes for a fraction of a second can cause a highway accident that involves multiple vehicles.
  • Speeding: Driving over the speed limit or even at the limit during inclement weather can lead to a highway accident. Drivers are urged to use discretion when choosing how fast they can travel within the speed limit. Slowdowns ahead or other impairments to traffic flow may make it necessary to travel at a slower speed.

Investigating a Highway Accident

Multiple-vehicle highway accidents are complex, and our investigators use procedures aimed at determining liability. The investigators are dispatched to the accident scene, where they look for clues as to why the collision happened and who was responsible. Using accident reconstruction techniques, they are able to visualize the vehicles before, during, and after the crash and use this information to determine liability.

They speak to witnesses and obtain police reports to review them for inaccuracies. They also search for video of the accident from other drivers and surveillance cameras. Once all the information is accumulated, it is handed over to our legal team, who use it to build a strong case for our client.
