Two People Critically Injured in Citrus Heights Roadside Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Citrus Heights personal injury lawyer. An accident in Citrus Heights in the evening hours of June 18 critically injured two people while three others suffered minor injuries. The incident happened after a two-vehicle collision that was minor, where others exited their vehicles to try and help. At this point, a Chevy Tahoe ran into those who were standing near the cars, causing serious injuries. Local police are asking that anyone with information call as soon as possible because any tip, even a small one, might be helpful in determining why those people were hit by the pickup.

Accident Details

The crash occurred along Greenback Lane close to Brookhaven Way around 10:00 at night, according to a representative of the Citrus Heights Police Department. It was reported that the people who were in the minor collision got out of their vehicle and were standing with a good Samaritans who had pulled over to help when the pickup ran into them. This was when five of people were struck by the pickup and hurt. It is unknown whether the people were standing near the curbside or somewhere on the roadway.

Driver Arrested

The Tahoe driver was placed under arrest for giving the police false information. At this point, neither alcohol nor drugs was suspected as a reason for the collision with those outside their vehicles. However, excessive speed has not been ruled out as a cause. A public information officer noted that people should use caution, not only when in an accident but in the moments afterward, and to pay attention to their surroundings. Following the crash, Greenback Way remained closed until about 6:00 in the morning while an investigation was conducted to analyze all the evidence.

Speeding and Accidents

Speeding is a component of aggressive driving and causes numerous types of car accidents with resulting injuries and deaths each year. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 27 percent of all traffic fatalities (10,111) in 2016 died in collisions related to excessive speed. Speeding also includes driving at or under the speed limit in bad weather conditions where it should be reduced. Speeding not only contributes to the incidence of crashes, it increases the severity of injuries and likelihood of fatalities.

Aggressive Driving and Accidents

Aggressive drivers are those who operate a motor vehicle in an unsafe way and without regard for others. Reckless driving actions include the following:

  • Speeding
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Tailgating
  • Intentionally slowing down in front of another vehicle
  • Running a red light or stop sign
  • Blocking other vehicles that are attempting to change lanes or pass
  • Changing lanes without using a turn signal

Avoiding an Aggressive Driver

Aggressive drivers and those exhibiting road rage are a significant concern to other motorists. However, there are a few techniques that may help if one confronts you or someone you love such as:

  • Remain calm.
  • Try to get out of the way of an aggressive driver.
  • Do not make eye contact with the other driver.
  • Wear your seatbelt, and do not counter an aggressive driver by making similar maneuvers.
  • Ignore gestures that are threatening or harassing.
  • Call authorities and report the other driver, including the make and model of the vehicle and license plate number if possible.
