Racing Driver on Highway 99 Injures Elderly Couple

A hit-and-run accident in Sacramento on November 11 caused serious injuries to an elderly couple when their vehicle struck a wall and turned over on Highway 99. The accident happened sometime after 2:00 in the afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) report. The driver of the Chevrolet Spark involved in the accident was identified as age 83, and he was accompanied by his wife, age 78. Their vehicle was headed north along the freeway at about 60 mph when the accident occurred.

Witnesses Report Information About Hit-and-Run

Witnesses to the accident said that a driver, who was moving at 95-110 mph, was also traveling north and appeared to be racing a BMW. At this point, the CHP believes that the driver of the sedan attempted to pass the Chevy Spark but collided with the Chevy at its right rear. The impact of this high-speed collision caused the older couple’s vehicle to drift right into another lane and onto the shoulder of the road. The Spark then hit the sound wall before overturning repeatedly and finally coming to a rest on its wheels.

Elderly Couple Hospitalized With Major Injuries

First responders with the Sacramento Fire Department determined that the couple had both suffered major injuries, although they do not appear to be life-threatening. They were transported to a nearby hospital for additional treatment and evaluation.

Fleeing Vehicle Identified

The vehicle believed to be responsible for the hit-and-run accident was identified by CHP officers as a 2015 to 2019 Subaru WRX STI, white in color, which was matched by its serial numbers by vehicle parts that were left at the accident scene. Officials said that the suspect vehicle probably has damage to its right side and front end and that the door trim on the right side is missing. The driver of the Subaru was described as a heavy-set male, early 30s and with a mustache and red hair.

Information Needed to Locate Hit-and-Run Driver

Investigators into the hit-and-run are asking that anyone with information on the location of the suspect vehicle or its driver’s identity to call the CHP office in South Sacramento at (916) 897-5600 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and ask for Officer Young or Officer Humerickhouse. After business hours, those with information may call the Communication Center for the Sacramento CHP at (916) 861-1300.

Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents can be one of the most terrifying and dangerous types of crashes. Vehicle occupants can be ejected, especially if they were not wearing seat belts. Another element in a rollover accident is roof crush. Manufacturers are required to ensure that the infrastructure of the vehicle will support at least three and one-half times its weight when the vehicle flips. If it cannot, the passengers in the car can suffer serious injuries such as traumatic brain injury and damage to the neck and upper back, among others. It is always important to preserve the vehicle after a crash so investigators at our Sacramento car accident law firm can examine it for structural flaws.

Hit and Run – How Do I Collect Damages?

Many clients are concerned that if the driver is not apprehended, they will be unable to collect damages. Although our firm is successful in helping to determine who drove the vehicle in many cases, even if the fleeing driver is not found, clients can be compensated for their injuries. This is accomplished by using their own uninsured/underinsured driver policy

This policy is offered to motorists when they purchase their auto insurance and will pay for medical costs and lost wages, and other expenses. If the injured party does not have uninsured/underinsured protection and a member of their household does, they can collect under the member’s policy. There is no increase in premium when this is used.
