Truck Accident Causes Diesel Spill Near Manteca. A truck accident along Highway 99 in Manteca resulted in a 12-hour road closure on September 6, 2018. A large truck was traveling southbound along Highway 99 in the vicinity of Yosemite Avenue when the truck crashed through a guardrail. The big rig continued and came to a rest along the southbound offramp of Yosemite Avenue shortly after 3:00 a.m. Emergency personnel from the Manteca Fire Department responded to the accident, extricated the trucker out of the mangled cab and transported him to an area hospital for treatment of major injuries. Hazardous material crews were also called to the scene to clear the area of spilled diesel fuel which took nearly 12 hours to complete. Authorities indicated that no other parties were involved in the crash.

Investigation

A cause of the accident has not yet been determined by investigators. However, the California Highway Patrol reported that drowsy driving may have contributed as a factor to the collision.

Drowsy Driving

Driver fatigue is the dangerous combination of fatigue or sleepiness and driving. This usually occurs when an individual is deprived of necessary rest, suffers from an untreated sleep disorder, consumes alcohol, uses medications that make them sleepy or works extended shifts.

Effects of Drowsiness on Driving

The most frightening aspect of fatigue is that one never knows when sleep overcomes his or her body. This can be extremely dangerous when driving. The effects of drowsiness may affect a motorist’s attentiveness to the road, impair their ability to make reasonable driving decisions, and slows reaction time in case sudden steering or braking is required to avoid an auto accident.

Fatigued Driving and Trucking Accidents

Fatigue plays a significant role in many truck accidents each year. Some of the reasons for this include higher pay for more miles driven and pressure from management. Truckers often resort to caffeine to stay awake on the road. Sometimes they may resort to illicit drugs to combat their drowsiness.

Recovering Damages in Trucking Accidents

When an individual suffers injuries in a collision caused by the negligence of a truck driver, the injured party may be able to seek repayment for the resulting losses. Compensatory damages can help an injured person become whole and restored as much as possible to the state or condition he or she was in before the accident happened. These damages may include medical treatment expenses, time lost from work, property damage, loss of future earnings, pain and suffering, and more. Punitive damages may also be sought in cases involving extreme recklessness such as a trucker driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or falling asleep while behind the wheel.
