Causes of Mechanical Problems

Avoiding mechanical problems in Elk Grove vehicles is critical for safe operation and preventing traffic accidents. If a vehicle has been neglected, improperly maintained or defective, components may become worn out and cause decreased performance, leading to dangerous situations on the road. Common mechanical problems that can lead to traffic accidents include:

  • Inadequate tire pressure can affect braking distance. Low tire pressure makes your tires unstable and causes them to lose traction and grip. When you experience sloppy steering and slow braking due to this problem, it can lead to a serious car accident.
  • Brake failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is the cause of around 22 percent of all traffic collisions. Worn brake pads make a screeching sound which means you need to get them to a shop quickly.
  • Faulty steering systems can result from problems with the power steering belts, fluid, a blocked hose or pump malfunction. Any of these mechanical problems can make it difficult to maneuver in an emergency situation.
  • Engine problems such as misfiring can have many causes, and the one thing they have in common is that they can cause serious traffic accidents. Misfiring is often due to the spark plugs or wires, ignition coils, a vacuum leak or carbon tracking. The driver cannot only seriously damage their engine if it isn’t repaired but can end up in an accident.
  • Steering problems can be caused by a worn suspension system, making it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle. There are a number of clues that your suspension system is failing, such as a bumpy ride, tires wearing irregularly, vibrations or a clunking noise.
  • Worn shock absorbers can cause excessive body roll and reduce the driver’s ability to react in an emergency situation which is a serious mechanical problem. Because the rubber, plastic and metal in a shock absorber can degrade over time, it affects the vehicle’s stability and stopping and steering, all of which are a dangerous combination.
  • Malfunctioning head and brake lights can increase the risk of a collision in poor visibility conditions. The headlights obviously allow you to see in the distance at night. The brake lights let other motorists behind you know if you are slowing down or stopping. When any of these components malfunction, an accident can occur.

Investigating an Accident Involving Mechanical Problems

If vehicle mechanical problems occur and lead to a traffic accident, there are several areas that must be investigated by an accident attorney to prove the cause. Retaining the vehicle after a collision is important, so it can be examined to determine if lack of or faulty maintenance caused the accident. If it is a part that has become worn or was poorly repaired, the owner of the vehicle, mechanic or auto company that performs maintenance on the vehicle may be liable for any accident injuries if repairs were done but were substandard.

Auto Part Defects

Not all auto accidents occur because maintenance is neglected. Some happen because a defective part in the vehicle causes a collision. The driver who suddenly discovers their brakes or steering has failed, the accelerator is stuck or experiences tread separation in a tire can cause serious injuries to other motorists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and others. Examining the vehicle is necessary to locate any auto defects.

If a mechanical problem caused by a defect is found, an auto product liability claim may be lodged against the manufacturer, parts designer and others. Negligence does not have to be proved, only that the product was used as intended and unaltered.
