Three Injured Following Merced Car Accident

Three Injured Following Merced Car Accident. A head-on collision in north Merced left three people with injuries on August 21, 2018. At approximately 3:00 in the afternoon, a driver of a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound along Buena Vista Drive when they lost control of the pickup truck. The Chevrolet veered into the oncoming traffic lane and collided with a westbound Honda Odyssey van. Crews from the Merced City Fire Department were called to the scene to extricate the Honda driver who was reportedly pinned under the dashboard due to the collision. Medical personnel transported the Chevrolet driver and an adolescent passenger of the Honda to area hospitals for treatment. The Honda driver suffered a serious leg injury and was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Modesto for treatment. Officials have not yet released updates regarding the conditions of the victims.

Accident Investigation

According to a preliminary report by the Merced Police Department, drowsy driving is suspected as a factor in the head-on collision. However, the accident remains under investigation by local authorities as to cause.

Drowsy Driving and Car Accidents

Drowsy driving is a serious problem on California roads today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are various factors attributable to drowsy driving other than insufficient rest. These may include the use of prescription or over-the-counter medications, insomnia, and extended shifts at work. Other factors of drowsy driving may include undiagnosed sleep disorders or alcohol consumption.

How to Avoid Drowsy Driving

The most effective measure in preventing drowsy driving is to get a good night’s rest on a regular basis. It is essential to receive 7-8 hours of sleep each night to limit your risk of fatigue. This is also particularly critical for those taking a long family road trip since lack of sleep may contribute to a car accident down the road, putting families and others at risk. Following are some useful ways of avoiding drowsy driving:

  • Avoid consuming alcohol before operating a motor vehicle at all costs.
  • Be aware of any signs of drowsiness such as striking a rumble strip or drifting across roadway lines when driving alone.
  • Try to avoid driving after midnight or during the late afternoon as these times are considered prime periods for sleepy drivers.
  • When taking medications with drowsiness listed as a side effect, use rideshare companies such as Uber or Lyft or public transportation whenever possible.
