Rollover Traps Person Inside in I-80 Single-Vehicle Collision

A single-vehicle collision in Alta, northeast of Auburn, occurred on January 17 when the car left the roadway. The accident happened around 1:38 p.m. along westbound I-80 just east of the Baxter Road off-ramp. Cal Fire emergency responders were called to the scene when officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) discovered that the vehicle had exited the roadway, leaving at least one person alive but trapped inside.

Injured Person Life Flighted to Hospital

Fire crews arrived to extricate an elderly passenger from the vehicle, which was in a drainage ditch. Both lanes were closed down, and traffic was held just east of Baxter to allow a Care Flight helicopter to land. All the eastbound lanes were open, but only one heading west. The injured person was transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for the treatment of a major injury. An investigation is underway by the CHP to establish how the crash occurred.

What Causes a Run-Off-Road Accident?

An accident where a vehicle leaves the road is usually caused by a driver’s error such as speeding, bad weather conditions and others. One vehicle may also be involved in an accident caused by an outside factor. Medical bills, time away from work, and pain and suffering may be recovered to provide fair compensation for the injured party.

Defective Auto Parts and a Single-Vehicle Collision

Vehicle defects are often the cause of accidents. Here are some examples:

  • Run-off-road crashes result from faulty brakes, which prevent the vehicle from slowing down.
  • Drivers may be unable to control their vehicles if their power steering system malfunctions.
  • When a tire blows out or the tread separates, a driver may lose control of his or her vehicle, resulting in a single-vehicle collision.
  • A single-vehicle collision can occur when a driver loses control of his or her vehicle due to a suddenly failing engine.

In the event of a mechanical defect causing an accident, a personal injury lawyer can assist you in filing an auto product liability lawsuit. It is important to prevent the destruction of a vehicle after an accident so that engineers can inspect it for defects.

Government Negligence Can Lead to Accidents

Potholes, bad road design, pavement fissures and a lack of signage are other factors that can cause a single-vehicle crash. An injured party may sue the responsible government entity for financial damages. Government entity claims have a much shorter statute of limitations, so consulting with a lawyer is advisable.

The time limit for filing a claim after being injured by government negligence is six months. A lawsuit can be filed within six months if the claim is denied. A lawsuit can be filed within two years if you do not receive a response from the government entity within 45 days.
