Seven Injured in Fresno Rollover Accident

A rollover accident involving seven vehicles in Fresno left seven parties injured on the night of March 3, 2019. The incident occurred just before 8:00 p.m. along Highway 180 between De Wolf Avenue and Temperance Avenue. The collision began with a driver speeding along the eastbound lanes before crashing into a slower vehicle. The speeding car lost control, crossed the grass median, and entered the westbound lanes. This caused the car to overturn and crash into several oncoming vehicles. Seven parties, including a child, suffered serious injuries in the collision. It is unknown whether those injured in the car accident were hospitalized for their injuries.

Accident Investigation

The cause of the rollover collision is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The westbound lanes of Highway 180 were closed for several hours for authorities to investigate. However, the driver who caused the initial crash was reportedly arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. It is not yet known what other charges the motorist may be facing for the collision.

Common Causes of Rollover Accidents

A rollover is a significant concern for vehicles such as SUVs, light pickup trucks, and 15-passenger vans. These vehicles have higher centers of gravities. This means they are more prone to rolling over from speeding around corners, crossing a slope or dip, being hit by another car switching lanes, and striking the curb. In other cases, the faulty design of a motor vehicle or defective vehicle part or equipment may also be to blame for these devastating crashes.

Common Injuries in a Rollover Accident

Rollover accidents often result in a wide array of traumatic injuries. This is due to an occupant being thrown around inside an overturning vehicle or being ejected from one. Either of these situations can lead to catastrophic injuries such as internal trauma, cervical sprain, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damages, and even wrongful death. When a rollover is caused by the negligence of another driver or entity, the injured person or family of the decedent may be able to seek compensation for their losses. This can be done by filing a claim for personal injury or wrongful death. To learn about the factors that may affect the value of a personal injury claim, watch the following video.

Rollover Accidents and Roof Crush Resistance

Automakers are required to manufacture vehicles that meet certain standards regarding vehicle roof strength. Under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216, the strength of a motor vehicle roof must be able to withstand 1.5 times the weight of the car. When an automaker fails to do so, they may be held financially responsible for damages resulting from a crushed car roof. For more details, reach out to an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer.
