Multi-Vehicle Semi-Truck Crash Causes Injuries on I-5 Near Sutterville Road in Sacramento

A semi-truck crash causes injuries in I-5 near Sutterville Road during the morning commute on February 17, 2026, in Sacramento.

According to preliminary reports from the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7:48 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 just north of Sutterville Road.

Authorities reported that a semi-truck pulling a loaded trailer collided with a white Toyota Prius. A white Tesla was also involved and sustained significant rear-end damage. The commercial truck was reportedly hauling an estimated 40,000-pound load and required heavy-duty towing to clear the scene.

At least one individual suffered a head injury. The incident was classified as a minor injury collision, although officials have not confirmed the total number of people evaluated or whether any victims were transported to a hospital.

Emergency fire crews responded, and several lanes—including the fast lane and portions of the right-hand side—were blocked while responders worked to assist those involved and remove damaged vehicles. Traffic delays were reported as crews worked to restore normal flow.

The exact sequence of events leading up to the collision remains under investigation.

Driver Safety Tips for Sharing the Road with Large Trucks

Crashes involving commercial trucks can be especially dangerous due to their size and weight. Drivers can reduce risk by following these safety practices:

  • Maintain a safe following distance behind large trucks
  • Avoid lingering in a truck’s blind spots (no-zones)
  • Anticipate longer stopping distances for loaded vehicles
  • Signal early and avoid sudden lane changes near commercial trucks
  • Stay alert during heavy traffic and morning commute hours

Being cautious around large trucks helps protect everyone on the road.
