Semi Involved in Multiple Vehicle Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Thousand Oaks truck accident lawyer. A multiple vehicle crash on August 12 between a semi truck and three other vehicles caused injuries to several people along U.S. Route 101.

My best wishes and prayers go out to those who were injured and to their families.

What Happened

The accident happened shortly after 10:00 in the morning along Highway 101 northbound where it turns into Lynn Road when a semi was involved in a collision with several SUVs and the remaining vehicle involved in the accident was a Toyota Corolla, described as tan in color. No information has been released by authorities as to who was responsible for the crash and it is still currently being investigated as to liability and cause.

Injuries Suffered in the Crash

According to a report by authorities, several people were injured in the accident and taken, for medical treatment, to a hospital. One of the vehicle’s drivers was reported as not moving. Police, upon arriving at the crash site, reported that one vehicle had blocked one of the lanes of the highway while several others were over onto the shoulder of the road.

Truck Accidents

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety points out that collisions with big trucks often cause injuries or fatalities to those in a motor vehicle. This is caused by the much heavier weight and size of a big truck. One contributing factor to truck accidents is the increased distance a truck requires to stop versus a motor vehicle. Of the 3,852 individuals who died in 2014 in truck accidents, 69 percent were in motor vehicles and the remaining 15 percent were either pedestrians, bicycle riders or on motorcycles. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, collisions caused by big trucks and buses increased 8 percent over the previous year. American Trucking Associations reports the following reasons for truck liability in accidents that are assigned at a higher percentage than motor vehicles.

  • Following too closely
  • Brake problems
  • Work pressure
  • Unfamiliarity with the roadway
  • Use of illegal drugs or alcohol

Accident Injuries

All motor vehicle accidents can result in serious injuries; however, a collision with a big truck is much more likely to result in a fatality or devastating injuries. Underride accidents, which cause the vehicle to travel underneath the truck, are the most lethal since the top of the vehicle becomes crushed. Some types of injuries include:

For example, brain injuries, according to WebMD, can cause permanent and debilitating life-long problems that may cause a dependency on others for their care. When faced with the need for long-term care for a family member because of another’s negligence, an experienced truck accident lawyer can help. In the complex issue of trucking accidents, while a driver may be held responsible for negligence, in some instances, the company that employs the trucker may be responsible. If faulty brakes or another part on the truck failed causing or contributed to the crash, the manufacturer may be held responsible through a product liability lawsuit.
