Sacramento Pedestrian Fatality on Highway 50

Sacramento Pedestrian Fatality on Highway 50

A Sacramento pedestrian fatality occurred during the early hours of April 10 when a walker was killed by a motorist. The collision happened along Highway 50 close to Harbor Boulevard at around 2:00 in the morning. It happened when a woman was struck following an accident in which she was involved. I want to extend my sympathy to the loved ones of the pedestrian who died in the accident.

Details of the Accident

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), callers reported an overturned vehicle in the westbound lanes of the highway. A witness to the accident said that the pedestrian was struck while getting out of their vehicle after a separate crash. This was when the pedestrian was hit by a white sports car, which continued heading westbound without stopping. The CHP later released a message asking the police in Davis and West Sacramento to keep an eye out for a white sports car with dark colored rims. Caltrans closed some westbound lanes along the highway where it intersects with Interstate 80 as an investigation was conducted. The lanes were reopened before 5:00 a.m.

Hit and Run Accidents

In an accident involving a Sacramento pedestrian fatality, the driver who doesn’t stop may be charged with felony hit and run for leaving the scene. All motorists in California in a crash are obligated to stay and offer aid and exchange information. When injuries or a fatality are involved, it can result in felony charges.

Pedestrian Fatalities Due to Car Accidents

The number of Sacramento car accidents involving pedestrians has been rising steadily. Statistics showed that a Sacramento pedestrian fatality occurred about 10 times per year prior to 2017. In 2017, the number was up to 19. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, California had the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the first six months of 2018 that involved traffic accidents. The report included the following factors:

  • Driving and texting is a major cause of a Sacramento pedestrian fatality. Taking one’s focus from the roadway can make a driver miss seeing a pedestrian before it’s too late to stop.
  • Drugged or drunk drivers are a danger to all others sharing the roads, including pedestrians.
  • Other unsafe behaviors such as running a stop sign or red light contribute to accidents.
  • Speeding statistics show that the faster vehicles are moving, the more likely that a Sacramento pedestrian fatality will occur.
  • Drowsy driving prevents the driver from staying alert to pedestrians crossing streets or in the roadway.
  • An increase in SUVs on the roadway cause more pedestrian fatalities. The National Transportation Safety Board reports that SUV accidents involving pedestrians are more likely to cause a fatality. This is because of their larger body and higher carriage. It increases the risk of serious injuries to a pedestrian’s torso. It also increases the risk of becoming trapped underneath the car.

Compensation After an Accident

A family that has lost a loved one due to negligence may be able to place a wrongful death claim. Those with injuries can also obtain fair compensation. A personal injury lawyer can help by examining the evidence and dealing with the insurance company. If it isn’t possible to recover the financial damages you deserve, the lawyer can take the case to civil court.
